We've decided to launch Moku's blog to better tell what we do and, above all, share our vision of the digital world. As a software house, every day we accompany companies from different sectors on their digital transformation journey.

There’s a topic that often comes up in conversations with our clients, and one we’d like to reflect on: is it better to choose custom software or an off-the-shelf solution? We like to think of software as a suit.

You can buy a standard size in a store, ready to wear, or you can go to a tailor and have it made to measure. Both options make sense, it depends on who you are and what you truly need.

If software sits at the core of your business, our experience tells us that custom solutions are often the better choice. Software built specifically for your needs can grow and evolve alongside your company, adapting to change and supporting your goals over time.

There’s another crucial point where discussions often get stuck: price. And here we want to share an important consideration, what costs less at the beginning isn’t always the most economical solution in the long run.

Standard software may seem convenient, but it often comes with hidden costs: forced integrations, rigid processes, continuous adjustments to fit real needs. What initially looks like a saving can, over time, turn into a barrier to growth.

When evaluating new software, the real deciding factor is:

  • How much do I want to differentiate myself from the competition?

  • Am I willing to adapt my processes to the software or do I want the software to adapt to them?

There's no answer that's valid for everyone. That's why our approach at Moku isn't to always propose only custom solutions, but to start from strategic consulting: we analyze objectives, processes, and growth scenarios, never neglecting the experience of end users.

The central point is that there's no absolute winner. There's the right choice for that specific company, at that precise moment. To put it in terms of our initial metaphor: not everyone needs a tailored suit, but nobody wants to end up with an outfit they can't even fasten.

In the end, the value isn't only in the software you choose, but in the process through which you come to choose it. And it's precisely in this journey of accompaniment that the added value lies: not to sell a product, but to guide companies toward the decision most suited to them.
